Many clients come to us having not initially heard of Women’s Health Physiotherapy. They usually find us having been recommended by a health professional or perhaps a friend. We completely understand that most women don’t like to talk about experiencing problems with their pelvic floor, especially their bladder or bowels, but the good news is - Women’s Health Physiotherapy really can help you.

Women’s Health is often seen as a bit of a taboo subject, and that’s why so many of us don’t speak up when we are experiencing problems which are actually very common but not normal and can be treated. In fact, new data from the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists suggest that more than 60% of women have at least one symptom of poor pelvic floor health.

At HLP Therapy, we specialise in treating issues relating to women’s health. For this reason, all of our treatments and services are tailored specifically for women on an individual basis. This starts with physiotherapy. Not all women will experience the same issues, so that’s why Women’s Health Physiotherapy can be broken down into so many categories.

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

Problems with your pelvis or pelvic floor can often be associated with pregnancy and child birth. Whilst that it is commonly the case, pelvic floor dysfunction can happen at any age and stage in life (regardless if you have had children or not). There are other reasons you may need pelvic floor physiotherapy. In fact, here are just a few problems that women experience which can be treated with targeted pelvic floor physiotherapy:

  • Direct trauma to the area.

  • The (unwanted) changes the Menopause can bring.

  • Pelvic surgery.

  • Pain during and after pregnancy (pelvic girdle pain)

  • Experiencing pain during sex.

  • Pain in your lower back, tail bone, hips or groin area.

  • Pelvic organ prolapse.

  • Endometriosis.

  • Vaginismus.

  • Vulvodynia.

If you are experiencing ANY of these symptoms then please book a 60mins PHYSIOTHERAPY appointment with CHARLOTTE on the "Book now" page.

Bladder & Bowel Dysfunction

A woman sitting on the toilet constipated, she is holding her tummy.
Stress Incontinence - a lady holding herself. Stress incontinence causes leaks when you cough, sneeze or laugh.
Urge Incontinence - a lady holds her tummy as urge incontinence often means having a suddesn urge to go to the toilet.
An older lady holding her tummy as she is suffering from functional incontinence.

Problems with your bladder or bowels are a lot more common than you may think - you really aren’t alone! We know that these issues commonly affect your confidence, can cause distress and anxiety and that’s why the team at HLP Therapy will listen and provide you with the best help and treatment for the problems you have.

We have treated many clients for bladder and bowel problems, the most common symptoms that people come to us with are:

•    Stress Incontinence: leaking when you cough, sneeze, exercise or laugh.
•    Urge Incontinence: The urge to pass urine is so great that you don’t make it to
the toilet in time.
•    Functional Incontinence: When the bladder & bowel are healthy but mobility or poor access mean you don’t make it to the toilet in time.
•    Overflow Incontinence: Leaking when the bladder is not fully emptying when going to the toilet.
•    A constant need to go to the toilet.
•    Constipation.
•    Difficulty emptying your bowels fully.
•    Leaking stools.
•    Unable to control the passing of wind.

Women’s Health Physiotherapy FAQ’s

What is Women’s Health Physiotherapy?

Women’s Health Physiotherapists specialise in many different areas of symptoms relating to women. At HLP Therapy we specialise in pre and postnatal care, pelvic floor dysfunction at any age (regardless if you have had children or not), back pain, muscular and joint issues and the menopause.

What happens in a Women’s Health Physiotherapy Consultation?

Your initial consultation will very much be focused on the problems you are experiencing. As a way of getting to the root issue, we will listen and discuss the symptoms you are feeling, how it is affecting you and the areas of pain or discomfort.
We will assess your movement and strength and
design a programme which is tailored to your needs.
Sometimes (depending on your symptoms) it may be beneficial to have an internal vaginal examination. This is never mandatory, you are in complete control and if you would rather not have the internal examination, then that is absolutely fine.
As a result of your consultation, assessment and treatment, we will be able to determine the best course of action to help you with your pelvic floor, bladder or bowel issue.

How can a Physiotherapist Treat Issues with my Pelvic Floor, Bladder or Bowel?

After your consultation, your treatment will depend on the issue you are experiencing. Some of the more common methods of treatment include:

•    Creating a pelvic floor exercise plan for you. This can be very effective in treating your pelvic floor, but may take several months to achieve the desired results, and so does need commitment.

•    Possible lifestyle changes. It may be necessary to change your eating and drinking habits to help ease your symptoms. This may particularly be the case with any issues you are facing with your bladder or bowel. A bladder diary may also need to be completed.

•    Breathing and relaxation techniques may be used to help connect and relax the pelvic floor.

•    Acupuncture can also be used with pelvic pain conditions.

Does Women’s Health Physiotherapy Work?

Yes it can. Although the time frame for recovery is different for each person and depends on the issues presented.

Does Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy require me to be Naked?

No, please wear whatever is comfortable for you. If we do perform a vaginal examination (only with your consent) then you will need to remove the bottom half of your clothing and a towel will be placed over you.

Is a Vaginal Examination like a Smear Test?

Although we are examining the vagina and pelvic floor, it is not the same as a smear test. Our clients report that vaginal examinations are more comfortable than having a smear test, as we conduct a “digital examination” (which means we insert a gloved, lubricated finger inside) to check your pelvic floor.

If you have any questions or concerns about a pelvic floor physiotherapy, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Good pelvic health is vital for everyone. We all have pelvic floors, but few understand their function and are able to connect with this intimate area. Most women believe pelvic floor dysfunction “is just something I have to put up with,” but we believe this is not the case. At HLP Therapy, we love seeing women return to full function and living their best life – free from pain or discomfort.
